During this year's show day, Larry Tande found me on my lunch break and asked me into the Open Class office. I wasn't sure what was in store for me. But when I got in the office, he asked me to read this: (which was located in the Holstein Show Catalog)
The 'Elgin' Award, Karl L. Mueller Memorial, new in 2006. This award, exclusive to the Minnesota State Fair Cattle Show, will be presented to the herdsman/showman who exhibits exemplary leadership and sportsmanship throughout the current Minnesota State Fair. An anonymous committee will make the selection, with the recipient being honored on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 during the Open Class Dairy Cattle Show. This award will be given to any person, any breed, at the current Minnesota State Fair Dairy Shows. A traveling trophy will be awarded to the winner each year. The Mueller Family will present the award.

2006 - Henk & Bonnie Van Dyk, Willows Edge Holsteins, Wisconsin
When I was done reading this, Larry said to me, "This year's recipients are your parents." WOW, I was shocked, elated and excited for them.
Then Larry said, that they would like to try to keep it all a surprise, so I had to figure out a way to get my parents in the ring during the 2 year old class.
After a little quick thinking, my mom was going to be leading a two year old Jersey, so that works for her. So then I enlisted our long-time family friend, Ron Flor, to get my dad into the center of the ring. (And I had to make sure the ring 'security' let the guys into the center of the ring too.) It all worked out well and my parents were 'surprised' and 'honored' to receive the award.
What a neat recognition for two such hard-working individuals! I am very proud of them both!
